Welcome to the Mountain Bike section of Rat's World!
UPDATE......I have just put out the tracking on my forks. I hit a kerb at an angle at around 20mph (look it was raining and dark and I didnt see it..) It buckled my rear wheel (Sunn Big Mammoth) Snakebit my front tube and when I tighten the QR on my RST 260 I can see one leg move in line with the other...hmm...
Have just bought some RST Mozo Pro 4.5's. They are loads more stiffer, however I have yet to bottom them out.....maybe they need a bit of bedding in? They have raised the bike so much I have had to cut down my seat tube. I also got hold of some Shimano MX70 Shoes (the BMX type ones) for a mere £30...sorted...
Also I have just got hold of a pair of '99 XT V brakes....And by God they are stunning!!! Also just got a pair on Panracer Magic DH tyres..cant wait to give them a proper try!
OK.. Went out to give the new tyres a proper try and the, erm, frame like sorta died on me. I was just riding along (honest!) and the main pivot nut fell out. Onto the road. With the threads from the frame still on the nut. Hmmmm... Phone Ye Olde Bike shop and its under warrenty. Fair play to them, as soon as they got the new frame It was kitted out with my stuff ready to be picked up the same day. However, they said the warrenty was a bit "iffy" due to me fitting 4.5 forks, new rear wheel etc. Anyhow, I now have a 1999 Univega Flyte 895, worth a rather hefty £250 frame only. (will it is for me). Pics will follow, but it really looks "da bomb!" in all it's blue, red and white glory.
Okay. Now I'm fed up. Bottom bracket just died. Making horrible grating noices and feels as rough as sandpaper from Toxteth. Also refuses to turn now and then. Took it out to take a look. Non-drive side cup is full of muddy water. Bearings are about 1/2 original height as they now have flat spots. Part of the bearing cage is AWOL. It's only a cheapo Chen-Shing jobbie anyway. So I have a UN72 on it's way.
New BB is fitted. Feels nice and is lasting well. Brought a new saddle, it's the black and white slimmed down Tioga DH sofa thing. And dead comfy it is to!(probably because it has 0.5" of flex in it!!) So after a few rides, i get a bit worried. seems the saddle is bent. But I look at the seatpost and it has cracked along the clamp. There goes another £30. DH circus is coming this weekend to Mountain Ash, which is just up the road from me. Tried the course with some pro's... and it is mad! About 8mins long, 6-7 drop off's 9ranging from 2ft to 6ft), many bus stops and a bridge. So I'm riding though a forest bit and it is sort off like doin steps because the trees were planted in rows. So I come out of the forest, and see a 4ft drop off straight in front of me. Ok ok... weight shift back, front wheel up... front wheel is already over the edge. ***DARN***. Flew over the bars and landed square on my head. KO'd for up to 10 secs. Winded myself. Back and neck hurting. Head seems ok, thanks to my BELL helmet which is now totalled. Another rider came along, helped me to my feet. Carried on to the bottom of the hill.
There is also a cool duel slalom track up there too. 3 sets off doubles, a triple, a log section, a drop off, and many a berm. So there's this straight leding into a 180 degree 5ft high berm. I hit the straight and think "I don't need the brakes, the berm will take me around." So I hit the berm at around 20-25mph. Crank the bike real low. And then run out over the top of the berm. Slide along for a bit. No pain because the ground is soft...
This is mad:-
